Can you help? The Church of St Mary de Haura has stood at the heart of the community of Shoreham-by-Sea for 900 years. Between 2002 and 2006, The Friends of St Mary's undertook the restoration of the medieval stone vault (ceiling), both phases of which won major architectural awards – pictured below. Thanks to a large grant from English Heritage/Heritage Lottery Fund, and the generosity of national and local charities, and individual donors, the work has now been completed. Fundraising must continue for the foreseeable future, however, to enable essential electrical and other projects to proceed, and to safeguard the future maintenance of the building.
Richard Andrews (Church Architect), with Prince Nicholas von Preussen, and Victor Standing (Vicar), receiving the King of Prussia Gold Medal in London for St Mary's vault restoration project, Nov. 2006 Past generations have left us a magnificent heritage in St Mary's, and it is regarded as one of the most beautiful and architecturally important churches in Sussex. It is also a real community asset, and is often used for concerts, lectures, plays, exhibitions and other cultural events. The best way of keeping in touch with news and events is to join The Friends of St Mary's Church. This Charitable Trust was set up many years ago to enable anyone in Shoreham and beyond who has an interest in the church building to contribute to its upkeep on a regular basis. There is an Autumn Festival when the Friends meet together for a day, and they are kept informed regularly about forthcoming events at the church.
