Church LifeMembers of St Mary's Church are currently involved in the following activities.ServersThe team of servers consists of 4 adults and 7 younger members under the guidance of Head Server, Frances Smith. The role of the servers is to assist the clergy in services, by leading processions with cross and candles, and escorting the clergy and choir to and from their places, at the weekly Sunday Eucharist. They also light the Gospel Book amongst the congregation, assist with the preparation of the Holy Communion, carry banners and provide incense occasionally at special services such as Festival Evensongs. At important services during the church's year, they have special parts to play. At Baptisms, candles are lit and distributed from the Easter Candle, and during the Christingle Service and on Advent Sunday, the servers light candles held by the whole congregation. The major festivals of Easter and Christmas see a large team in place, with several candle-bearers and altar servers. They also assist with receiving gifts at Harvest Festival, distributing flowers on Mothering Sunday, leading the procession of the congregation through Shoreham on Palm Sunday, and the stripping of the church's altars on Maundy Thursday. Occasional social outings for the younger members of the team are arranged by Frances.
